Aging in disordered systems

چکیده

The dynamics of strongly disordered systems becomes extremely slow or glassy at low temperatures, which results in a characteristic aging scenario. This means that the outcome of measurements strongly depends on the history of the system within the glassy phase, even on macroscopic time scale like hours, weeks or years. This area of non-equilibrium dynamics in disordered systems became recently a major focus of research interest, in particular with respect to spin glasses and related systems. Here we give an overview on these activities with a focus on Monte Carlo studies. Typeset using REVTEX

Aging in correlation functions

We review the most striking experimental results on aging in a variety of disordered systems, which reveal similar features but also important differences. We argue that a generic model that reproduce many of these features is that of pinned defects in a disordered environment, hoping between different metastable states. The fact that energy barriers grow with the size of the reconforming regio...

Response behavior of aging systems with temporal disorder

Temporally disordered systems frequently exhibit complex intermittent dynamics accompanied by aging and weak ergodicity breaking. Here, we analyze the response behavior of temporally disordered dynamical processes by employing a functional representation. We find that the linear response to an external perturbation is history-dependent and explicitly calculate the response function for a sub-di...

Comparative review of aging properties in spin glasses and other disordered materials

Aging phenomena have been studied in very different materials like polymers, supercooled liquids or disordered orientational crystals. We recall here the main features of aging in spin glasses, and use this example of magnetic systems as a guideline for the description of the others. A particular attention is put on the sensitivity of aging to the cooling rate and to temperature variations. Thi...

Nonmonotonic Aging and Memory Retention in Disordered Mechanical Systems.

We observe nonmonotonic aging and memory effects, two hallmarks of glassy dynamics, in two disordered mechanical systems: crumpled thin sheets and elastic foams. Under fixed compression, both systems exhibit monotonic nonexponential relaxation. However, when after a certain waiting time the compression is partially reduced, both systems exhibit a nonmonotonic response: the normal force first in...
